Team Canada Now Ready for the Ultimate Food Fight

ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – (July 26, 2016) Northern Canada may be known for its cold winters, but this past weekend it could not have been hotter. Thanks to the 2nd Annual Canadian Food Championships, an International Qualifier for WFC, cooks and chefs throughout the nation had a chance to enter the kitchen arena and prove their culinary chops in Edmonton, Alberta.

Thousands of foodies and Food Sport fans descended upon Churchill Square to see a few familiar faces - and new ones - earn their way to WFC through the largest Team Canada competition yet. Reigning 2015 World Burger Champion, Rusty Johnson, was one of those winners, as he defended his Canadian championship title even though he had already earned a WFC exemption.

“CFC has consistently brought some of the best home cooks and pro chefs to WFC, and we love seeing Team Canada’s culinary creativity and passion at WFC,” said Mike McCloud, CEO of World Food Championships. “Last year 11 out of the 20 competitors on Team Canada made it to the final rounds at WFC, and two competitors went on to claim World titles. It looks to me like their 2016 team will be just as successful in Orange Beach, Alabama.”

As the exclusive qualifying event for Canada, CFC is held in conjunction with the Taste of Edmonton, one of the largest food festivals in the world. Contestants have to win their way through a multi-day, tournament-style format that mirrors the WFC. More than $50,000 in cash and prizes are up for grabs, including WFC golden tickets for first and second place finishers. The event kicked off on Friday, July 22nd and lasted through Sunday, July 24th.

The official categories of the 2016 Canadian competition were Bacon, Burger, Dessert, Sandwich, Seafood and Steak. To round out Team Canada, contestants in Barbecue and Chili will be determined at CFC-affiliated qualifiers. The Canadian BBQ Society will award four Golden Tickets via their national standings, while the chili competition at the Kleefeld Honey Festival in Kleefeld, Manitoba will award Golden Tickets to its top two finishers.

About the Canadian Food Championships
The Canadian Food Championships is a high energy, high intensity, timed, double-blind judged cooking competition open to any Canadian resident with prizes valued at over $50,000. It is the only Canadian qualifying event to get to the World Food Championships, where a prize of $100,000 awaits the Final Table Champion.
