Like all professional sporting leagues, new rules are added and some are tweaked, but 2020 will see a big change in the way a new World Food Champion is judged and ultimately crowned.

At this year’s 8th annual World Food Championships (WFC), that fact came through loud and clear as pitmaster Ryan Murphy impressed certified judges from around the world with his hometown flavors during WFC’s challenging barbecue contest. Along with taking home a World Barbecue Championship win, Murphy earned $10,000 and grabbed a spot to compete for the overall World Food Champion title in May, which adds another $100,000 bonus prize to the ultimate winner’s payday.

General Manager and Chef of SAW’s Soul Kitchen in Birmingham, Alabama, Matthew Statham, displayed his culinary skills at the World Food Championships (WFC) in October by taking first place in the tournament’s Chef category. “If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.” That has been a proven motto for veteran World Food Championships’ (WFC) competitor and home cook Jodi Taffel throughout her Food Sport career. Taffel’s strategy finally paid off this past October at WFC’s 8th annual Ultimate Food Fight in Dallas, Texas, where she was crowned the 2019 Bacon World Champion. The Altadena cook’s long-awaited category win came with over $10,000 in prize winnings, a seat at WFC’s $100,000 Final Table and a perfect 100 score to add to her list of culinary achievements.
