The Final Table: Indianapolis Rescheduled To August

In light of the continuing developments of the COVID-19 virus and an announcement yesterday from the Governor of Indiana, the World Food Championships (WFC) and its Indiana partners — Visit Indy, Ivy Tech Community College, Sysco and Team Indiana — just announced that The $100,000 Final Table and corresponding food events have been rescheduled for August 5-9, 2020. 

WFC’s President and CEO, Mike McCloud, said that the organization has been closely watching the Indianapolis market and talking with local leaders, both public and private, for several weeks now to assess the safety and practicality of conducting “The Final Table: Indy” in May. 

“While we have been eagerly and diligently planning the crescendo moment of Food Sport, the last thing we want to do is endanger the health of our colleagues and community during this continuing crisis that not only impacts Indy, but also our nation,” McCloud said. “We certainly understand and will follow all precautionary guidelines from Indiana and its leaders, so postponing our event is certainly the right thing to do at this time.”

“It takes a lot of people to conduct our Final Table, from culinary students to volunteers to staff and sponsors, not to mention the 10 champions and their teams/families,” McCloud continued. “Even though the virus may be subsiding by May, there’s still a lot of unknowns and very little visibility on the end of this crisis. We are hopeful and seriously believe that these concerns will be behind us by August. If not, we will take another assessment and make an updated announcement.”

All ticketed events surrounding The Final Table, such as the Judging Class, Seafood Boil and Hog Roast, will now be scheduled during the new August timeframe. However, some locations are now subject to change because of other events and bookings previously scheduled for that time. Details about WFC’s ticketed events, as well as the judges and three Final Table challenges, will be released by May 1, 2020, or sooner, depending on the status and conditions of COVID-19.

“Hosting and preparing for The Final Table in Indianapolis has significantly expanded the public and private sector support for Food Sport’s shining moment, Team Indiana and our Culinary Crossroads initiative,” said Larry Dickerson, the organizer for the Team Indiana and Culinary Crossroads’ campaigns.

“Having folks here in May would have been great, but I have no doubt, that come August, ‘The Final Table: Indy’ competition and corresponding events will be phenomenal and serve up a great offering of the people, product, places and services which make Indiana the Culinary Crossroads of America,” Dickerson added.

The cooking challenges for the Final Table will still take place at Ivy Tech Community College and involve three rounds of elimination on August 8th and 9th. Up to 300 spectators will be able to purchase tickets to witness the first two challenges, getting an insider’s peek at all the action before it hits national TV. The last challenge will take place behind closed doors and with sponsors and families only so that the crowning of the 9th World Food Champion can be revealed on the TV show.
