The Family Recipe that Won the Golden Ticket!

“Did my husband put you up to this?” was the immediate reaction from Celebration resident, Sherri DeVito, upon learning she won the World Food Championships Online Recipe for Pasta in the exclusive to Celebration residents' contest.

The lifelong Florida resident is the newest champion to enter the World Food Championships in the Pasta category. DeVito, who has spent her married life in food competition with her husband, Dominick, admits that her competitive spirit is well honed.

She and her husband will throw down in their kitchen over everything from toast to eggs. Their three children, 23-year-old Dominick Jr., Lauren, 18, and Nicolette, age 11, have been the referees for these competitions for their entire lives.

Thinking ahead, DeVito reports that she expects Nicolette to serve as her sous chef when her team enters the World Food Championships arena in November.

"Dominick told me that he's Italian so I needed to learn to cook Italian,"DeVito laughed.

Her winning Fagioli recipe comes from his family's dishes, but she's put her own German, English and Irish spin to it. DeVito explained that the secret to the recipe is that the ingredients are homegrown from a small town outside of Naples, Italy.

Most Fagioli recipes use pancetta bacon or other cured meats, but the DeVito family uses a hambone. That, combined with the Romano cheese topping and bits of plum tomato, have made this a recipe that sends you back to the foothills of Avelino!

DeVito is now the Celebration’s Golden Ticket holder and is cleared to compete in the Pasta category Nov 3-10 at the World Food Championships. She will join 49 other Golden Ticket holders from around the world in the Kenmore Kitchen Arena where she will compete in a structured pasta build and will create her family’s signature dish. 10 competitors will then compete in the top 10 competition and a chance to win $10,000 in cash. The winner from that will compete in the Final Table for the chance to win the $100,000 prize purse.

But for Sherri DeVito, the bragging rights have already started. She enters her next kitchen throw down with her husband as an undisputed champion.
