Saucy Mama Recipe Contest Entry - Jerk Burgers with Spicy Tropical Slaw

 By: Bobbie

I was so incredibly honored to be chosen as one of 25 bloggers to compete in the Saucy Mama's2014 Recipe Contest. The winner of this contest wins $1,000, a golden ticket to represent Saucy Mama in The World Food Championships in Las Vegas in November, and a $1,000 travel stipend. Not to mention the fact that I was over the moon excited to get my hands on the 6 sauces that I was being provided with to create my recipe.
I seriously stalked my mailman!
Of course he delivered the box on a day when I was out and about, but that was kind of cool because I came home to a big box on my door step. I was up my stairs so fast I am not even sure if I touched them. Kevin thought I had lost my mind, but then again I think he has that thought on almost a daily basis.
Once inside I ripped open the box and had to fight the desire to throw the packing peanuts all over the room. It was like Christmas and I was 5 years old!
In the box I received Orange Habanero Wing SauceJamacain Jerk Wing SauceHoney BBQ Wing SauceHot Wing SauceFour Leaf Balsamic Vinaigrette and Marinade, and Honey Dijon Dressing. Immediately I picked up the phone an called my kids. I had them all come over and participate in a taste testing of the sauces and dressings.

We were all immediately drawn to the Jamaican Jerk Wing Sauce, and all but one of us fell in love with the Orange Habanero Wing Sauce. The one hold out was my daughter, aka Miss Picky Pants. She is terrified of peppers and freaked out as soon as she heard the word habanero. I assured her that I would not try to feed her something that would light her mouth on fire, and after some hesitation she gave it a try. Then grabbed the bottle and tasted it again. "Mmmm this is really good", were her exact words.
BINGO I knew we had a winner.
For the contest we had to choose from one of the World Food Championship categories. Those categories were:
- Burger
- Sandwich
- Bacon
- Seafood
- Pasta
- Cheese Recipe
Well if you know me, you know that there was no question about what category I wanted to work with. Burgers are my guilty pleasure. I love making them with all sorts of wild ingredients, so that was the way I decided to go and set my mind to work immediately to come up with a burger recipe that would utilize the two sauces we all loved.
I invited all of the kids back over for the final taste testing, and couldn't wait to hear what the had to say. You know I was excited to get a resounding two thumbs up from everyone, including Miss Picky Pants. My son even tried to steal my bottles of sauce, ummm NOT!!
The great thing about this recipe is that it is so quick and easy to make. Now the family has a new favorite burger to enjoy with the fabulous Saucy Mama sauces.
So this is my Saucy Mama's 2014 Recipe Contest Entry. I hope you give it a try, I know you will be happy you did!
Jerk Burgers with Spicy Tropical Slaw

For the burgers:
2 pounds ground 80/20 beef
Salt
Cracked black pepper
Saucy Mama's Jamaican Jerk Wing Sauce for basting

For the slaw:
1/2 bag coleslaw mix (cabbage and carrot blend)
1 20-ounce can pineapple tidbits, drained well
1 large mango, diced
1 small red bell pepper, chopped
1/2 medium red onion, diced
1/2 bunch fresh cilantro, chopped
1 tablespoon fresh ginger, grated
1/2 cup fat free Greek yogurt
1/4 honey
2 tablespoons white vinegar
4 to 5 tablespoons Saucy Mama's Orange Habanero Wing Sauce
Salt to taste

6 burger buns
Thai sweet chili sauce (found in the Asian food isle of your store)

Split your ground beef into 6 portions. Form the patties, salt and pepper them generously, and set aside.

In a large bowl combine the slaw ingredients minus the salt. Stir to combine well, taste for seasoning and add salt to taste. Cover with plastic wrap and place in the refrigerator.

Heat a grill or grill pan to medium-high heat. Brush the grill with an oiled towel. Place the patties on the grill and brush the top with the Saucy Mama's Jerk Wing Sauce, grill for about 3 minutes. Flip the burgers carefully and brush the cooked side with the sauce. Continue to grill for an additional 4 minutes for medium rare, or cook to desired doneness. Remove from the grill.

To assemble the burgers place the burger patty on the bottom bun. Top with a generous amount of the spicy slaw, drizzle with sweet chili sauce, and place the top bun on the slaw.

Serves 6

ENJOY!
