Q: Tell us about your culinary journey. Who or what inspired you to cook?
A: My culinary journey began early, inspired by my grandmother and mother, who first taught me how to cook. Growing up in a diverse neighborhood in New York, I was influenced by a rich cultural blend; including Asian, Jamaican, Puerto Rican, and Dominican cuisines. From the age of 14, I worked in various restaurant roles to learn both cooking skills and business operations, eventually developing my own unique style. My passion for BBQ and a freestyle approach have driven me to seek out unique experiences and forge my own path in the culinary world.
Q: How long have you been cooking?
A: 35 years
Q: How many times have you competed at WFC?
A: Six times
Q: What categories have you competed in at WFC?
A: Barbecue, Live Fire, Sandwich
Q: What motivated you to get into Food Sport?
A: I was motivated to get into Food Sport by a passion for BBQ and the desire to showcase my unique freestyle approach to cooking. My experiences in diverse kitchens and the inspiration I gained from various culinary traditions fueled my ambition to elevate BBQ's reputation in the culinary world. The opportunity to meet new people, share my stories, and engage in friendly culinary competitions also played a significant role in my motivation.
Q: How would you describe your experience in Indianapolis at WFC 2024 and being named a Champion?
A: Exhilarating and fulfilling! Winning the sandwich category with a perfect score highlighted my culinary skills and dedication to my craft. It was a proud moment to showcase my New York-inspired creation on such a prestigious stage. Being named a Champion not only validated my hard work but also allowed me to connect with fellow chefs and food enthusiasts, reinforcing my passion for BBQ and culinary creativity. This recognition also further inspired me to continue pushing boundaries in food and sharing my unique culinary vision.
Q: What is your favorite WFC memory/experience as a competitor?
A: One of my favorite WFC memories as a competitor centers around the camaraderie and shared passion for FOOD among fellow chefs. The thrill of competing on a prestigious stage, particularly the moments of intense focus during cook-offs, stands out. Additionally, the joy of receiving positive feedback from judges, especially if it involved showcasing my unique New York culinary creation, is a highlight. Networking with other competitors and celebrating shared successes after the events also contributes to making WFC a memorable experience for me.
Q: What would a Final Table victory mean to you? Any ideas on how you would spend/invest your winnings?
A: It’s not just about the trophy; it’s about turning my passion into a reality. A Final Table victory would validate my hard work and dedication to grilling, showing that I can share my culinary creations with the world.
With the winnings, I aim to open a food truck park, showcasing my award-winning sandwiches and providing a platform for other talented chefs. This would be a vibrant hub for food lovers, fostering community and supporting local culinary entrepreneurs. I’d allocate funds for infrastructure, marketing, and even assist aspiring food truck owners.
Ultimately, this victory would create a space that nurtures creativity, serves great food, and brings people together—fulfilling my dream of making a positive impact on the food scene!
Q: Any advice for folks considering entering the WFC Kitchen Arena in the future?
A: My advice for anyone thinking of entering the Kitchen Arena is to stay passionate and true to your culinary voice.
Here are some key tips:
1. **Experiment and Innovate**: Don’t hesitate to try new combinations and techniques. Find what makes your style unique and let it shine in your dishes.
2. **Practice, Practice, Practice**: Master your skills and recipes. The more you cook, the better you’ll get. Embrace feedback to improve.
3. **Know Your Ingredients**: Quality matters! Familiarize yourself with local markets and seasonal produce to elevate your dishes.
4. **Stay Resilient**: Competition is tough. Don't let setbacks discourage you—learn from them and keep pushing forward.
5. **Network and Build Relationships**: Connect with fellow chefs and food lovers. Building a community can provide valuable support and opportunities.
6. **Have Fun**: Remember your passion for cooking. Enjoy the process, share your love for food, and let that inspire others.
Entering the Kitchen Arena can be incredibly rewarding, so stay dedicated, keep cooking with heart, and who knows where it might lead you!
Q: Tell us an interesting fact that few people know about you:
A: Most folks know me for my passion for grilling and cooking, but here's an interesting fact that few people know: I’ve been collecting shoes and sneakers for over 25 years! I have over 150 pairs, and my sneaker room looks like a mini-Foot Locker!
What’s interesting is that each pair tells a story—whether it’s a limited edition I waited in line for or a classic that reminds me of a special moment in life. I believe just like in cooking, style is an expression of who you are, and every step I take is a reflection of my journey. Plus, it gives me a chance to showcase my personality both in the kitchen and beyond! Who says you can't have flair while grilling up a storm?
