One of Tucson’s most popular lunch spots placed second Saturday night in the sandwich competition at the World Food Championships in Las Vegas.

Beyond Bread got into the top 10 with a Reuben sandwich — something that is a weekly special at the restaurants, but not on the regular menu.

The final challenge was to make a sandwich that included ham and cheese. The Tucson restaurant placed second in that competition and was presented a check for $4,000.

First place went to Robert Butler, whose bio was not listed on the World Food Championships website.

Foodie and TV host Adam Richman hosted the first-ever food competition, which sought the best burger, sandwich, chili, side dish, barbecue and recipe.

Beyond Bread, which has been around since 1998, got into the contest after being named to Tucson Weekly’s Best of Tucson 2011. Contestants qualify by winning local competitions.

The bakery and sandwich shop has three Tucson locations: 421 W. Ina Road; 3026 N. Campbell Ave.; and 6260 E. Speedway.
