Final Table Q&A - Al Lino

Final Table Q&A - Al Lino Name: Al Lino
Hometown: Rio Hondo, TX

Q: Who or what is your inspiration?
A: My family because it's not what you take when you leave this world. It's what you leave behind you when you go; and I want to leave a legacy!
Q: How long have you been cooking?
Q: Competition bbq 2 years. In total since I was 8 years old in a commercial kitchen.
Q: What motivated you to get into Food Sport?
A: As a bbq competitor we get to think outside of the styrofoam box and really chef it up! We can push limitations to a whole other level and I’m just getting started.

Q: How many times have you competed at WFC?
A: 2023 was our first year.
Q: What is the name of the dish you won your category with at the 2023 WFC?
A: A Taste Of The Border.
Q: Can you tell us a little about that dish?
A: The dish consisted of smoked chicken pozole mole, verde bbq chicken empanadas, and pulled bbq chicken tamales. We really brought Deep South Texas to this turn in. From the smoked hominy, fire roasted peppers and cole seared corn husks; it was truly a delicious story!
Q: What do you like most about competing in WFC?
A: I loved the way I was able to express myself and push the limits on a silver platter.
Q: What was the biggest challenge you faced at WFC?
A: Lack of sleep. I don’t think I slept right after we won the Famous Dave’s cookoff. After that it was all about practice, time, plating and precision.
Q: What would a Final Table win mean to you?
A: It would mean that next year I have to set the bar even higher. The money is great but going back and testing myself again is even better. Hopefully I could travel and compete internationally. Teach, learn and meet great people through the taste of food.
Q: What type of competitor do you identify as:
A: Competition Team
Q: Any advice you'd like to share with competitors new to WFC?
A: Practice. Order your silver platter and plate your turn ins. Time yourself. Walk with the plate. Then when you think you are satisfied, do it again.
Q: What is something few people know about you?
A: I’m Batman.
