Food Fight on Fremont Street

Prize fights in Nevada, and the area near Las Vegas, date all the way back to the 1890’s.  Beginning in the late 1950’s, premier prize fights became a major character in the modern history of the Las Vegas we know and love today.  From Patterson vs Liston, to Leonard vs Hearns, all the way to Mayweather vs Canejo, Las Vegas has been home to some of the greatest fights in history!

In 2013, as a celebration of Las Vegas’ heritage of unbelievable prize fights, the World Food Championships presents the Food Fight on Fremont Street.  The Food Fight will connect former world-class professional athletes with the high stakes, high pressure world of competition culinary.

As professional athletes retire and begin to look beyond the playing field, many look into the world of food.  From opening restaurants to creating BBQ sauces, they take the same drive and same passion that made them a successful athlete and apply that to their culinary endeavors.

Free to the public on Saturday, Nov. 9 at the world-famous Fremont Street Experience, two world-class professional athletes will face off in a heavyweight Food Fight for the ages.  Stay tuned for more information!

Earl Campbell -- earlcampbell2.jpgEarl Campbell Joins the Food Fight on Fremont Street

NFL Hall of Fame running back Earl Campbell has joined up with the World Food Championships and will participate in the Food Fight on Fremont Street this November in Downtown Las Vegas.  President of Earl Campbell Meat Products, the "Tyler Rose" has turned his focus to the food industry and premium smoked meats since his retirement from professional football in the late 80's.

As a University of Texas Longhorn, Campbell won the Heisman Trophy in 1977 after leading the nation in rushing with over 1,700 yards on the ground.  Campell would go on to be the first overall pick in the 1978 NFL Draft by the Houston Oilers.  A Texan by birth, Houston was the perfect location for Campbell to carve out his mark on the NFL. Campbell would go on to become one of the most prolific runners in professional football history. Winning numerous accolades throughout his professional career, Earl Campbell was an unstoppable force in the NFL and would go on to be named to the NFL Hall of Fame in 1991.

Also beginning in 1991, Earl Campbell Meat Products is one of the fastest growing meat companies in America. In 2012, the business sold over 10 million pounds of Texas smoked premium sausage and is currently expanding its reach nationwide.  In addition to meat products, the company also produces all-purpose seasonings, rib rubs and a famous BBQ sauce.

Bill Bates -- bates-bill-bio.jpgBILL BATES TO MATCH UP AGAINST EARL CAMPBELL IN THE FOOD FIGHT ON FREMONT STREET

NFL All-Pro Safety and 3-time Super Bowl Champion, Bill Bates has signed on to go head-to-head with NFL Hall of Famer Earl Campbell in the Food Fight on Fremont Street competition at the World Food Championships.

A member of the 1992, 1993 and 1995 Super Bowl Champions team, Bill has been a long time favorite of Cowboys fans.  Earning a reputation as one of the leagues biggest hitters, Hall of Fame coach and broadcaster John Madden once stated, "Every game starts with a kick. With Bill Bates on the field, every game begins with a bang!"

In 1984 he was named to the Pro Bowl in just his second year, forcing the NFL to create a first-time roster spot for special teams players, making Bates the first such player to receive that election. Bates received the Cowboy's famed Bob Lilly Award four consecutive seasons from 1990 to 1994. This award is chosen by a vote of the fans and annually goes to the Cowboy player who displays leadership and character on and off the field. When Bates retired following the 1997 season, he tied the club record for service with 15 seasons in Dallas. In that time he amassed 217 games played (second in team history), over 700 tackles and 14 interceptions.

During his time away from the Football, Bates has spent time as a motivational speaker, inspiring people to overcome struggles and attack adversity head-on.  Bates has also donated his time and energy to various other charitable organizations including: United Way, Children's Medical Center, Scottish Rite Hospital, FCA, Campus Crusade and Young Life. Recently, Bill has started his own organization to benefit children. The Bill Bates Foundation For Children and The Bill Bates High School Football Classic were created to raise money for worthwhile organizations that help children.

The Food Fight on Fremont Street will take place on Saturday, Nov. 9 at the Fremont Street Experience in Downtown Las Vegas. The event is free and open to the public.
