Food Champ Challenge: Burger results

We asked for the best burger recipes you’ve got – and by gravy, er, burger – you delivered! The World Food Championships team and the Kenmore crew were absolutely blown away by the entries submitted to cookmore.com, which demonstrated originality, creativity and mastery over the burger business. Thank you to everyone who submitted an entry!

So, without making you wait even a moment longer…

Congratulations to the Grand Prize winner, ChefCarols! ChefCarols’ winning burger recipe was her Korean Bulgogi Burger. What did the judges – Kari Karch, Ray “Dr. BBQ” Lampe and Beth Peterson – have to say? Well, keep on reading!

Bulgogi

“Winner winner Korean Bulgogi burger dinner! Yes I’d like one for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Oh, and if you wouldn’t mind whipping me up one for dessert too, that would be great. After countless amounts of entries received on Cookmore.com, this burger tipped the scales with originality, technique, and tastiest burger I’ve eaten in ages. When you have to pop the top button on your pants to make room for the last bite, clearly you have my vote. The flavor combinations are incredibly satisfying to the palate, which pays homage to the points of sweet, salty, sour, and bitter. The Korean Bulgogi burger also encompasses my truly favorite culinary sensation, umami. Finding an earthy dish with this scrumptious layer of flavors makes for a grand prize winner. Congrats and see you in Las Vegas for the World Food Championships!” - Kari Karch

“The Korean Bulgogi Burger is a great idea and in this recipe  it’s executed well too. It packs a lot of big fun flavors into a burger but the burger remains the star of the show. Kimchi is all the rage these days but here, it’s used a condiment just there to add a little flavor and crunch and that seems right to me. This is a worthy winner.” – Ray Lampe

“The story of this burger leads us to the heart of the recipe and the tasty flavors that will make everyone a fan!  This well developed recipe is held together with detailed step-by-step instructions making this Korean Bulgogi burger the winner!
Bulgogi, typically, has a lot of different elements that are not always the same. One Bulgogi characterstic revealed is the marinated charred beef.  This burger also sets itself apart with a crunchy slaw.  The slaw mocks a traditional Korean kimchee but this “quick kimchee” version is made with no fermentation and yet, still yields lots of flavor! The rice wine and vinegar based slaw is laced with a perfect amount of heat, balanced with a nutty sesame oil.   One of my favorite parts of the whole creation is the creamy coconut citrus spread acting as a bright exotic glue that holds it all together. This burger has a lot going for it.  In the end, it’s the delicious, not-so-typical flavors that make this burger the Grand Prize Winner!” – Beth Peterson

The following recipes were some of our judges’ favorites – and also winners of the FoodChamp Challenge:

Pork Shoulder Burger with Smoked Pimento Slaw by Zestuous

Here’s what Kari Karch had to say about Zestuous’ burger:

“How do I love a good pork shoulder burger with pimento slaw? Well let me count the ways, or rather list of delicious ingredients! I was blown away with this creative entry that was loaded with over-the-top, mouth-watering elements. I for one love anything burger, but when you start playing with my emotions by adding golden tomato jam and pimento slaw, well now you are just messing with my head. At least stop and hand me a stack of napkins and a cold beer! Superb idea using slightly seared Cajun pork shoulder and cheesy goodness to take this burger into the top ranking categories. Give yourself a pat on the back and don’t forget that cold beer. Cheers!”

Huevos Rancheros by Cheryl

Here’s what Ray Lampe had to say about Cheryl’s Huevos Rancheros recipe:

“The Huevos Rancheros Burger has all the elements of a great burger, a big tasty patty, cheese, a sauce, some green stuff and the optional but outstanding addition of a fried egg. But these aren’t your standard burger ingredients. I love incorporating the chorizo into the patty and from there salsa and avocado are great additions with the little bit if extra cilantro to bring it all together. I’d eat this burger for breakfast, lunch, or dinner!”
