World Food Championships Training Tips: Packing & Playing

Oh, yeah, it’s getting closer and closer! There’s a combination of exhilaration and angst, nagging anxiety of the unknown and pumped excitement for the known!

A lot of luggage and boxes are going to be packed.  Boxes and luggage containing all the secret weapons for creating the killer dishes of competitors in each of the categories—then, of course, there are probably vans, U-Hauls, trucks and cars being packed to the brim with everything from the kitchen sink.  If you want to know what’s happening with food on November 6-10th, then it’s all happening at the World Food Championships in Las Vegas!

Of course, like any festive rockn’ event it’s not all work—there’s a lot of play in between being in the arena cooking.  There’s also tons of things to do from small intimate friend parties to big full-scale bashes.  This means pulling out your best frocks and having some memorable events where you want to get dolled up, make-up on—well, unless you’re a dude—hair done—new color and highlights—pedis and manis, plucked eyebrows, and a big white toothy smile  Why?  Because YOU could very well be at that Final Table in front of thousands of supporters and fans, and if you are, you’re going to, for sure, be part of the reality TV version of the World Food Championships!

Here are some things you don’t want to miss—just think, a different party frock for each of these parties!

Food Fight on Fremont Street - Yep, come watch the meanest and baddest athletes trading in their helmets, pads, basketballs and more to don an apron and tackle cooking!  Yes, there will be slamdunks, touchdowns, high fives, happy dances in the end zone and more smack going down than is legal!  Come see Earl Campbell, NFL Hall of Fame running back, and 3-time Super Bowl Champion, Bill Bates, go toe to toe, eye to eye and grill to grill in cooking! It’s a sparring match between two huge egos who’ve shown their prowess on the field; now let’s see what they bring to the kitchen!  For more about the Food Fight on Fremont Street, click here.

The Opening Reception – A gala affair full of energy and joire de vive on steroids, this Wednesday night reception is for all contenders. Come meet and greet folks you know and those you want to know.  Last year, it was exhilarating to finally meet in person and give big warm hugs to all our foodie friends we only knew from their photos and posts on Facebook—these folks are even better in person! Stay close to the WFC website for more details to be announced.

The Beth & Ally PreGame POP!  My dear friend Beth Peterson and I are the two official bloggers of the World Food Championships. Beth and I go back a long time, like 3 years and growing. We were thrown together as roomies on the FOX Network MasterChef, Season 2 where we lived for almost 2 weeks in a hotel room.  Since then, we’ve been the best of friends, like Frick and Frack, Peas n’ Carrots—whatever you want to call it.  And, now this year 2013, we’re hosting our first, and not our last, POP!  This event is on Wednesday November 6th, 4:45 pm to about 6 pm and open to everyone!  Right now, at this writing, it’s slated to be at the Kenmore Kitchen Arena on Fremont Street.  There’ll be POPcorn, champagne and bottled water!   Check the WFC website for more details as to location- or just follow the sounds of the POPs and find the party!

The Ultimate Bacon Experience – Ok, if you’re a bacon lover, eater or just love the smell of the piggy magic, then you won’t want to miss this event!  Imagine every application of bacon that can be created for food—grandma will roll over in her grave when she sees the uses for bacon beyond the morning breakfast with sunnyside eggs!  This will happen twice on Saturday, November 9th—from 1 to 3 pm and again from 4-6 pm.  Sorry but you gotta pay the pig for this one—admission at the door is 50 bucks and in advance (online at the WFC website) you’ll save 10 bucks—enough to buy a pound or two of bacon! Be there or be square—it’s at Fremont East District! Click here for more details!
